The "critical" 12 game stretch is over and the Mets proved themselves to be a legitimate team going 6-6 against the top two teams in the division. They are not contenders by any means but they showed character and proved that they are a team to be dealt with. They also lead the major leagues in team ERA. Let's Go Mets!
As those of you who read my blog on a regular basis know I do not quote all manner of arcane statistics and metrics that seems to be in vogue these days. I'm more of an old fashioned baseball fan who depends on more basic stats and gut feelings to formulate my thoughts and opinions. Not that I have any problems with people who rely on saber-metrics, mind you. You use whatever works for you. But I personally believe that you're just as likely to be beat if you play by the numbers as you are if you play with your wits alone. I have no idea why I'm writing this now (probably because I don't have anything else to write) but there it is.
The baseball draft was held yesterday and the Mets took Rice pitcher Phillip Humber with the third overall pick. Everyone seems to think this was a good pick and I have no reason to think otherwise. But it's always hard to tell with the baseball draft since talent takes so long to develop and make it to the major leagues. We will not know how good or bad anyone's pick is for a few years.
